In a critical moment for the Biden-Harris administration, Joe Biden has once again seemingly undermined Kamala Harris, raising concerns about their coordination and messaging just weeks before the 2024 election.

Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris point at each other while flanked by Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff after greeting supporters during the Democratic National Convention at the Chase Center in Wilmington in 2020.

This latest instance occurred during a critical briefing on Hurricane Milton, where Biden praised Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his response to the incoming storm, contradicting Harris’s earlier claims that DeSantis was refusing to take her calls.

The situation unfolded on Monday when Biden spoke directly with DeSantis about the preparations for Hurricane Milton, a Category 5 storm expected to make landfall in Florida by Wednesday evening.

At the same time, Harris accused DeSantis of “playing political games” and claimed he had refused to respond to her outreach regarding the storm.

However, DeSantis denied these claims, stating during a press conference that he was unaware Harris had even attempted to contact him.

Biden further complicated the situation on Tuesday by commending DeSantis’s efforts, stating during a press conference, “The governor of Florida has been cooperative and gotten all that he needs. I talked to him yesterday. I said, no, you’re doing a great job and we thank you for it.”

This praise came despite Harris’s criticism of DeSantis, leaving many to wonder whether Biden and Harris are on the same page as the election draws near.

This is not the first time Biden has publicly contradicted or overshadowed Harris in recent weeks.

During a September appearance on ABC’s The View, Biden remarked that he had “delegated [Harris’s] responsibility on everything from foreign policy to domestic policy,” a statement that seemingly undercut Harris’s efforts to distance herself from some of the administration’s more criticized policies.

The comment reinforced Republican narratives that Harris was not merely a bystander in the administration but was involved in key decisions that have led to the current challenges facing the nation.

These contradictions have raised eyebrows, especially as Harris continues her campaign efforts.

Her recent appearance on the podcast Call Her Daddy has also drawn criticism.

Harris faced backlash for participating in a casual interview during a time when parts of the Southeast were still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.

Critics have pointed to this as a sign of her being out of touch with the pressing issues facing Americans.

The growing tensions between Biden and Harris have not gone unnoticed.

Harris is reportedly working to distance herself from Biden’s policies as the election approaches.

Sources suggest she is trying to carve out a path separate from the president in the final stretch of the campaign, but Biden’s repeated public statements linking her to his administration’s successes and failures make that a difficult task.

At a recent campaign event in Detroit, Harris took the stage only to be overshadowed by Biden, who made a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing.

During that briefing, Biden discussed economic issues, including the recent dockworkers strike, and took credit for the administration’s job growth, further diminishing Harris’s efforts to present her own vision for the future.

CNN even commented on the dynamic, with analysts noting that Biden appeared to be “overshadowing” Harris and making it challenging for her to step out of his shadow as the election nears.

Biden’s remarks about Harris’s involvement in his administration’s policies only add to this impression. “We’re singing from the same song sheet. She helped pass all the laws. She was a major player in everything we’ve done,” Biden said last Friday, tying her to the administration’s record on everything from healthcare to the economy.

As the Biden-Harris team faces these internal rifts, Republicans are capitalizing on the narrative that Harris is out of sync with her own administration.

The latest controversy surrounding Hurricane Milton only adds fuel to the fire, with Republicans likely to seize on the apparent disconnect between the president and vice president as a sign of broader dysfunction within the Democratic campaign.

With Hurricane Milton expected to cause significant damage across Florida and the Southeast, the administration’s handling of the disaster—and the political fallout surrounding it—will likely play a key role in the final weeks leading up to the election.

Harris, already facing an uphill battle to define herself as a leader independent of Biden, may find it increasingly difficult to do so as these missteps continue to mount.
