Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) expressed frustration with political opponents during an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan on Sunday, stating that it has become “really hard to have an intellectual debate” with certain individuals.

Omar’s comments come at a time when approval ratings for the Democratic Party have reached record lows, with just 31 percent of voters viewing the party favorably, according to recent polling.

Speaking with Hasan, Omar criticized those she disagrees with, saying, “These people are just idiots. I really, you know, I’m at the point where it’s become really hard to have an intellectual debate with any of these people because the level of stupidity that they are displaying every single day is frankly embarrassing, not just in Congress, but as Americans, and the fact that these people are allowed to say the most ridiculous things tells you that the dumbing of the United States has arrived because how else do we get a Trump presidency again?”

The comments drew backlash, as Omar directly tied the idea of “stupidity” to the election of President Donald Trump, implying that those who supported him contribute to what she called the “dumbing of the United States.”

Omar, a member of the progressive “Squad” in Congress, has frequently been at the center of political controversies.

Her remarks follow a series of difficult election results for the Democratic Party, which has struggled to regain ground with working-class voters and other key demographics.

Omar’s statements also come amid broader concerns within the Democratic Party about messaging and electability.

Some party strategists have warned that alienating voters through divisive rhetoric could further erode support in future elections.

Hasan, who conducted the interview, has been criticized in the past for his defense of controversial figures and his strong opposition to Trump and conservative policies.

His discussion with Omar focused on political polarization and the challenges facing progressives in a shifting political landscape.

With the Democratic Party’s approval ratings at historic lows, and as key figures like Omar continue to make headlines with controversial statements, the party faces increasing scrutiny over its direction and ability to appeal to a broader electorate.
