The review will focus on Milley’s alleged efforts to “undermine the chain of command” during former President Donald Trump’s first term, officials confirmed.
The Pentagon has also ordered the removal of a second portrait of Milley, which is currently displayed in the Army’s Marshall Corridor on the third floor.
The portrait honors his tenure as the Army’s chief of staff. The removal is expected to take place by the end of the day.

This follows the removal of Milley’s official portrait as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was taken down on Inauguration Day just hours after President Trump was sworn in.
With both portraits gone, no images of Milley will remain inside the Pentagon.
Milley, along with several other former senior officials who served under Trump, had been assigned personal security details due to threats from Iran.
The security measures were put in place after Iran vowed retaliation for the 2020 drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, an operation ordered by President Trump.
On Fox News Sunday, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton urged Trump to reconsider the decision to remove protective security details for former officials including John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Brian Hook.
When asked about the moves against Milley, a senior administration official stated, “There is a new era of accountability in the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership—and that’s exactly what the American people expect.”
Gen. Mark Milley served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2019 to 2023 under both Presidents Trump and Biden.
He previously held the position of Army Chief of Staff from 2015 to 2019.

In journalist Bob Woodward’s latest book, War, Milley is quoted from a March 6, 2023, reception at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., where he allegedly referred to Trump as “fascist to the core!”
At the time of the reported comment, Milley was still serving in uniform.
Woodward had previously reported in another book that Milley privately expressed concerns about Trump’s mental state and nuclear command authority.
During Trump’s presidency, Milley played a role in several high-profile military operations.
After U.S. Special Operations Forces successfully carried out a raid that led to the death of the leader of ISIS in Syria in October 2019, Trump publicly praised Milley and his leadership.
“I want to thank General Mark Milley and our Joint Chiefs of Staff, and I also want to thank our professionals who work in other agencies of the United States government and were critical to the mission’s unbelievable success,” Trump said at the time.
Before leaving office, Joe Biden issued a pardon for Milley, though the specific details surrounding the decision remain unclear.
In Peril, a book by Woodward and journalist Robert Costa, it was revealed that Milley had twice contacted his Chinese counterpart during the final months of Trump’s presidency.
According to the book, Milley assured China that the U.S. military had no plans to launch an attack, actions that some critics viewed as overstepping his authority.
Mark Milley claims he wrote a resignation letter to Trump in June of 2020 but never submitted it. Instead the weasel stayed on and tried to subvert Trump from the inside.

With the Defense Department’s latest actions, Milley now faces heightened scrutiny over his conduct, with the potential of further consequences pending the review board’s findings.
