Kamala Harris held a “town hall” event on Monday alongside former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, moderated by Maria Shriver.

Vice President Kamala Harris joins Republican former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and journalist Maria Shriver at the Royal Oak Music Theatre Monday, October 21, 2024.

The event, meant to address key political issues, quickly drew attention for its awkward start.

Shriver informed the audience that all questions had been “pre-determined,” setting a somewhat inauthentic tone for what was billed as a public forum.

Throughout the event, Harris, known for her awkward public speaking style, struggled to connect with the audience.

Critics have often pointed out that Harris tends to over-rehearse her answers, and this event was no exception.

The prepared nature of her responses was particularly evident, especially after Shriver’s admission about the pre-determined questions.

Harris’ public persona has frequently been scrutinized, with some referring to her approach as “theater kid syndrome.”

This term suggests that Harris, often seen as heavily managed by her team, tends to overact in public appearances, leading to a lack of authenticity.

This was on full display during her remarks at the town hall.

At one point, Harris addressed the former president, saying, “In many, many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man.”

She continued, “But the consequences of him being president of the United States are brutally serious. There are things that he says that will be the subject of skits and laughter and jokes.”

Her tone, described by some as overly rehearsed and unnatural, reinforced the idea that she had likely practiced these lines in advance.

Given that Shriver had already disclosed that the questions were pre-arranged, it became apparent that Harris had prepared verbatim responses for the event.

Public speaking experts often advise against this approach, as it can come across as scripted and out of touch.

In a setting like a town hall, which is supposed to be conversational and responsive, heavily scripted answers can alienate the audience.

Throughout the event, Liz Cheney’s body language suggested discomfort and detachment.

The former Wyoming congresswoman appeared disinterested during Harris’ responses, often staring off into the distance or glancing around the room.

Her reactions didn’t go unnoticed, with many speculating that she was unimpressed by Harris’ delivery.

During the clip above, Kamala stated, ‘In a democracy, as long as we can keep it,’ which is very close to what Benjamin Franklin said, except that The United States is a republic and not a democracy.

The ‘A republic if you can keep it’ quote from Benjamin Franklin was in response to Elizabeth Willing Powel’s question: “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”

Cheney, once a prominent figure within the Republican Party, has faced significant backlash since her opposition to Donald Trump, leading to her historic loss in the 2022 Wyoming Republican primary.

Teaming up with Harris for this town hall seemed like an unlikely pairing from the start.

Observers noted that whatever political aspirations Cheney may have had in aligning with Harris, the partnership appeared to be falling flat.

Her visible lack of engagement during the event may reflect her growing disillusionment with this alliance.

The town hall, intended to highlight key political issues, instead appeared to showcase a strained and uncomfortable dynamic between Harris and Cheney.

As the event continued, it became clear that both figures were struggling to find common ground or deliver a message that resonated with the audience.

Critics of the event have pointed to the over-produced nature of Harris’ responses and Cheney’s apparent disengagement as major flaws in the presentation.

With just two weeks remaining until the election, Harris’ campaign continues to face challenges in its attempt to build alliances across the political spectrum.

Having chosen this path, Cheney may face further political setbacks in the coming weeks, as her partnership with Harris seems unlikely to yield the results she hoped for.
